Multiple Artworks – Multiple Indian Ocean

This project, which is part of the Cluster “Africa Multiple-Reconfiguring African Studies”, focuses on the multi-layered co-presence and circulation of verbal arts in relation to narratives, imagery, and sound travelling the Indian Ocean. Its main question is: Which multiple world(s) do literature and other artworks inhabit, imagine and construct? The working hypothesis is that literary texts and artworks in the Indian Ocean inhabit various worlds, which do not belong to one timeline, space, language and medium. Moreover, through their particular aesthetic form(s), they evoke an experience of transregional worlds, have ramifications on other art forms. In the project, Dr. Rémi Tchokothe, Prof. Dr. Clarissa Vierke and Duncan Tarrant are working together with Prof. Dr. Ute Fendler (Literatures in Romance Languages) to conduct/conducting case studies at different sites (the Comoros, Zanzibar, Mauritius, La Réunion and Mozambique/Island of Mozambique) with outlooks to India (Goa), Oman and Europe (France) to deliberately transgress linguistic, national, and continental frontiers and to gain more multidirectional perspectives of aesthetic relations.
