African Languages & The Construction of Knowledge
Andrew Harvey is Junior Professor of African Languages & The Construction of Knowledge since 2022. From 2012 – during his Master's studies – to present, he has worked with several communities in central Tanzania, documenting and describing their languages, and learning how to do this in a community-focused manner along the way.
Beginning with work on Gorwaa (Afroasiatic, 2012-present) and expanding to Ihanzu (Niger-Congo, 2016-present) and Hadza (language isolate, 2019-present), Andrew's work engages with the complex language situation present in central Tanzania's Rift Valley, where languages of all four of Greenberg's (1963) African language phyla are spoken, and have been spoken for some time. His research foci include language contact and morphosyntax, with the understanding that any linguistic insight must be tied to a community-driven documentary record, combining and celebrating the languages, cultures, and histories of the speaker communities involved.
