Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS)

The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) is now in the second phase funded by the German Research Foundation as part of the Excellence Initiative since 2007. In the focus of this unique structure of creative and innovative training are more than 100 Junior Fellows from 31 African, American, Asian and European countries. The PhD students profit from a clearly structured, academic and career-oriented training as well as a genuine expertise in the African studies which has increased continuously since the foundation of the University of Bayreuth. The international network with six Partner Universities on the African continent creates even more so excellent conditions for the research of our Junior Fellows.

BIGSAS offers a Dr. phil. and Dr. rer. nat. as well as a double degree, joint supervision and a range of sandwich models. The professors – the  Senior Fellows and the Associated Senior Fellows – of the Graduate School work in 21 academic disciplines, among others Anthropology, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Media Studies, Religious Studies, Sociology and Political Science. The current three general Research Areas formulate strategic research directions for the Junior Fellows and other members of BIGSAS. At the same time they represent the research interests and profiles of the Senior Fellows.
